Understanding the Workings of British Government

Delivered by two former MPs, this practical two-day course will give participants a better understanding of the British System of Government and how they fit in it.

As a result of attending this course participants will be able to:

1. explain Britain’s constitutional arrangements
2. explain the structure of government in the UK and how it operates
3. explain the role of Parliament including how it holds government to account 4. understand Bills and legislation
5. understand how Ministers interact with Parliament

 

Course Structure:

Day 1 morning: the Constitution

  • Introduction to Parliament

  • Structure of Government

  • Civil service and Government

    Day 1 afternoon: ministers and legislation

  • Ministerial office

  • Bills and delegated legislation

  • The various stages of Bills and secondary and delegated legislation- orders and

    regulations, affirmative and negativing procedure

  • The Whips office


    Day 2 morning: accountability

  • Select committees

  • Other forms of scrutiny

  • including social media

  • PQs- asking and answering

    Day 2 afternoon: accountability continued

  • Civil service accountability

  • Judicial review

  • Constitutional change
